COVID-19
As of May 27, 2021, there are 879,102 confirmed COVID-19 cases (an increase of 764) and 17,594 deaths in Arizona (an increase of 18). As vaccines become more available it is crucial that you and the people around you get vaccinated. These vaccines are now available to children between the ages of 12-15. Visit the AZ DHS website to find a vaccine near you.
We are looking for people to share their experience with the vaccine/COVID-19 with us, please reach out to us on any of our social media accounts (Fuerteaz) or at info@fuerte.org if you are interested. We want to showcase the resiliency and experiences of our communities.
To better assist those in our community with the impact of COVID-19, we have created two separate events. One being our Art Healing Workshops which are open to the public to express their experiences during the pandemic through all forms of art. We held our first event this last month and you can read more on that in our event section of the newsletter.
Our second event called Healing Group Circles is a more private and secure event that features the opportunity to speak with a therapist as a group. These events will be offered in both English and Spanish and will be held on separate days.
The first English Healing Circle Event will take place on July 6th and the first Spanish Healing Circle Event will take place on July 8th.
Immigration
The Arizona House of Representatives voted 33-27 in favor of repealing a law called Prop 300 through the Senate Current Resolution 1044 that has barred undocumented and DACA recipients to pay in-state tuition for higher education. These students are required to pay out-of-state tuition which is about an $18,000 difference and without access to receiving government-funded assistance like FAFSA or Pell Grants.
Voters will now be able to vote on SCR 1044 in hopes to pass the bill in 2022. SCR 1044 would allow all students who attend high school in Arizona for two years to be eligible for in-state tuition. Since Prop 300 was originally passed by voters, SCR 1044 must be approved by voters too. Stay tuned to how you can help pass this bill.
Justice is Not for Sale Act: Rep. Raul Grijalva reintroduced the Justice is Not for Sale Act that would prohibit federal, state, and local governments from contracting private prison companies and end immigrant family detention. This bill would also prevent those companies from overcharging inmates for certain goods. This bill would help put an end to the inhumane treatment of prisoners in these detention centers.
VOTING RIGHTS
The Arizona House passed #SB1485 which will purge over 125,000 voters from the state’s Permanent Early Voting List, 30,000 of them being Latinx. These people will no longer automatically receive a mail ballot during an election cycle. This bill is one of the dozens being introduced in the House to limit our voice and our power. After being passed in the House Gov. Ducey signed this bill less than an hour after it was on his desk. We see now more than ever that the only issue the governor and legislators do not care about is election integrity!
The fraudit is back! The “audit” on ballots from the 2020 presidential election is now back on after having to be paused for nine days for high school graduations. The audit is being commissioned by Arizona Senate Republican leaders who have enlisted the Florida company Cyber Ninjas to conduct the audit. The process must be completed by the end of June but only 500,000 ballots have been counted for the 2.1 million that seem out of reach. Not only are they running out of time, but they are also running out of the money being used to pay the people checking the ballots, as they are now relying on volunteers to finish this audit. Who knows if they can get themselves out of this mess? They do have ninjas on their side.
Filibuster:
The first filibuster occurred in 1837 and was used infrequently until after the Civil War when minority parties used it in order to stop civil rights efforts. Since then, many senators have used the filibuster to stop very important pieces of legislation that would help communities of color. The filibuster allows people who already have the power to prevent changes to the political system. Right now Republicans at all levels are proposing bills that would hurt nonwhite voters and are utilizing the filibuster to block legislation that would hurt them. Not only are they blocking bills they are using the filibuster to stop the investigation on the January 6th insurrection. For this reason, we need to put pressure on our senators to vote to end the filibuster.
The filibuster is standing in the way of real human rights, and our own senators continue to stand on the side of white supremacy. We will continue to call out the injustice the filibuster fuels and pressure our senators to stand with us instead of against us. Thank you to everyone who participated and who made our voice heard!
POLICING
In a 5-4 vote, the City of Phoenix has moved forward in establishing an Office of Accountability and Transparency with the purpose of providing civilian oversight over police and use of force investigations. A board of citizens will give input on police training, discipline and hiring. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallegos believes having an independent view on police will help Phoenix become a stronger city.
On the opposing side, there have been claims that this office will solely be used by anti police groups to further the defund the police movement. Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio voted against the office and claims this is no true office of Accountability. However, those against this office are unwilling to hear the voices of hurting family members and community members who have lost loved ones to Phoenix Police. Public comment proved that having another perspective to dire police situations is highly needed and a win for the fight against police violence.

Community quilting
Fuerte has been putting on some amazing events this last month with even more events on the horizon. We kicked off this month with our Community Art Healing Workshop where we virtually quilted and offered a safe space for people to come together and share their experience with COVID 19. We were able to hear stories from our community members while they expressed it through their unique creations..
“Have you Ever Called the Police? Community Members Speak”
Later in the month, we premiered our policing video “Have you Ever Called the Police? Community Members Speak” where we saw how our community members have been affected by the police. This premier was different from our others, as we tested out a new method of letting YOU decide what time it should go live, as well as making it readily accessible on Youtube to watch again! This project was created in collaboration with Poder In Action. We want to thank all of those who have participated in our events and we cannot wait to see you all at the next ones!

Art Healing Workshop - TBD
Community Healing Events are monthly open group discussions led by a different guest speaker who will guide participants in the creation of a collaborative art piece. Participants will be given the space to talk about their experiences through the COVID-19 pandemic and participants will be encouraged to create from that inspiration.
Healing Circles English - June 6th
The Healing Circles will be support group sessions led by a licensed counselor, meeting biweekly (virtually or socially distanced) and are closed to the public. If you are interested in being a part of these therapy sessions please fill out the following interest form to be contacted for further steps. Space is limited.

(Matrícula estatal): La Cámara de Representantes de Arizona votó 33-27 a favor de derogar una ley llamada Prop 300 a través de la Resolución 1044 del Senado que ha prohibido a los estudiantes indocumentados y beneficiarios de DACA pagar la matrícula estatal para la educación universitaria. Derecho al voto

¡La auditoría defraudada ha vuelto! La "auditoría" en los boletines de las elecciones presidenciales de 2020 ha vuelto después de tener que hacer una pausa de nueve días para graduaciones de la escuela secundaria. La auditoría está liderada por los republicanos del Senado de Arizona que han reclutado a la compañía de Florida Cyber Ninjas para llevar a cabo la auditoría. El proceso debe completarse a finales de junio, pero sólo se han contado 500.000 votos para los 2.1 millones que parecen estar fuera de alcance. No sólo se están quedando sin tiempo, sino que también se están quedando sin el dinero que se utiliza para pagar a las personas que revisan las papeletas, ya que ahora dependen de voluntarios para terminar esta auditoría. ¿Quién sabe si pueden salir de este lío? Al final del día, tienen ninjas a su lado.
El filibusterismo:
El primer filibustero ocurrió en 1837 y fue utilizado infrecuentemente hasta después de la Guerra Civil, cuando los partidos minoritarios lo utilizaron para detener los esfuerzos de derechos civiles. Desde entonces, muchos senadores han utilizado el filibustero para detener leyes muy importantes que ayudarían a las comunidades minoritarias. El filibustero permite a las personas que ya tienen el poder de impedir cambios en el sistema político. Ahora mismo los republicanos en todos los niveles están proponiendo proyectos de ley que lastiman a los votantes no blancos y están utilizando el filibustero para bloquear la legislación que los lastimaría. Por esta razón, tenemos que presionar a nuestros senadores para que voten para poner fin al obstruccionismo.
El filibustero se interpone en el camino de los derechos humanos reales y nuestros senadores siguen del lado de la supremacía blanca. Seguiremos denunciando la injusticia que el filibustero permite y presionando a nuestros senadores para que estén con nosotros en lugar de contra. Gracias a todos que participaron y alzaron su voz!
Vigilancia
En una votación de 5 a 4, la ciudad de Phoenix ha avanzado en el establecimiento de una Oficina de Responsabilidad y Transparencia con el propósito de proporcionar supervisión civil sobre la policía y su uso de fuerza. Una junta de ciudadanos aportará información sobre el entrenamiento, la disciplina y la contratación de la policía. La alcaldesa de Phoenix, Kate Gallegos, cree que tener una opinión independiente sobre la policía ayudará a que Phoenix se convierta en una ciudad más fuerte.
En el lado opuesto, ha habido reclamos de que esta oficina será utilizada únicamente por grupos anti-policiales para promover la desfinanciación del movimiento policial. El concejal de la ciudad de Phoenix, Sal DiCiccio, votó en contra de la oficina y afirma que esta no es una verdadera oficina de Responsabilidad. Sin embargo, quienes están en contra de esta oficina no están dispuestos a escuchar las voces de familiares y miembros de la comunidad que han perdido a sus seres queridos a manos de la Policía de Phoenix. El comentario público demostró que es muy necesario tener otra perspectiva para situaciones policiales extremas y una victoria para la lucha contra la violencia policial.

Taller de Sanación de Arte Comunitario
Fuerte ha puesto varios eventos increíbles este mes pasado con aún más eventos en el alcanze. Iniciamos este mes con nuestro Taller de Sanación de Arte Comunitario donde creamos un acolchado virtual y creamos un espacio seguro para que las personas se reúnan y compartan su experiencia con el COVID-19. Pudimos escuchar historias de los miembros de nuestra comunidad mientras se expresaban a través de sus creaciones únicas.

Al fin del mes, estrenamos nuestro video policial "¿Alguna vez has llamado a la policía? Los miembros de la comunidad hablan", donde escuchamos cómo nuestros miembros comunitarios han sido afectados por la policía. Este estreno fue diferente de nuestros otros, ya que probamos un nuevo método para dejar que USTED decida qué hora se estrena, y está fácilmente accesible en Youtube! Este proyecto fue creado en colaboración con Poder In Action. Queremos agradecer a todos los que han participado en nuestros eventos y no podemos esperar a verlos a todos en los próximos!

Los Eventos de Sanación Comunitaria son discusiones grupales abiertas mensuales dirigidas por un orador invitado diferente que guiará a los participantes en la creación de una obra de arte colaborativa. Los participantes tendrán el espacio para hablar sobre sus experiencias a través de la pandemia COVID-19 y se les animará a crear a partir de esa inspiración.
Círculos de Sanación Español - 6 de Junio
Los Círculos de Sanación serán sesiones grupales de apoyo dirigidas por un consejero autorizado, reuniones quincenales (virtual o socialmente distanciadas) y están cerradas al público.
