COVID-19
Arizona has now surpassed over 1.5 million covid-19 cases and has inched closer to reaching 25,000 deaths from the virus. With the Omicron variant surging through the country, cases are on the rise again at a rapid and worrisome speed. Arizona is reporting a weekly average of 10,275 new cases. Omicron is 2-3 times more contagious than previous variants making it easier for fully vaccinated people to catch the virus. Because of the infectiousness of this disease, booster shots are crucial in helping combat COVID-19, especially with only 66.5% of the 70.8% of the people eligible to review the vaccine being vaccinated. State of the state
This last week we had the pleasure of hearing Governor Ducey’s LAST State of the State address and it did not disappoint. He (of course) opened his address bolstering himself up as being the first governor to give his 8th State of the State address in 30 years. As expected, that was not the only time Ducey applauded himself throughout his address. He somehow found a way to celebrate his response to COVID-19 while his state has the highest rate of COVID and overrun hospitals. He said Arizona saved lives during that pandemic, has anyone told Ducey that we have the second-highest death rates from COVID-19 right behind Mississippi? I’m sure he would not care as long as his and his friends’ pockets are getting bigger! Ducey excitedly declared how well our economy is doing while holding hostage billions of federal dollars given to the state to help combat COVID-19. Instead, he is using that money to push his own political agenda while our children and the most vulnerable suffer. He stated that more emphasis needs to be placed on math and not masks, well Doug it’s really hard to focus on numbers in the classroom when teachers and students are feeling all of the effects of the pandemic. From there it just got worse. He praised “our cops” more specifically the Phoenix PD, the deadliest police department in the nation and currently under investigation by the Department of Justice for civil rights violations. With his address coming to an end, he could not help himself from throwing in anti-immigrant and border crisis rhetoric against the humanitarian need at the border. He wants to squander millions of dollars at protecting the border while children and our schools continue to suffer.
Election Year
A total of 469 seats in the U.S. Congress (34 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election on November 8, 2022. There are 36 gubernatorial seats up for election in 2022, including us. Voters in Arizona will elect one member to the U.S. Senate in the general election on November 8, 2022. The election will fill the Senate seat held by Mark Kelly (D), who took office in December 2020 following a special election victory that November. Local elections are just as important as national elections so make sure to research those running for office so that our community is taken care of and heard.
Redistricting maps
Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn. Each of Arizona's nine United States Representatives and 90 state legislators are elected from political divisions called districts. District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. The federal government requires that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity. However, when these districts are drawn unequally, this is called gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is used to discriminate against people, usually those of low income and people of color. Activists have been fighting this for decades with some success coming this year despite the attempted hijacking of our redistricting process. After the latest Census in 2020, we finally have new maps and although they are not as equally drawn as we might have wanted them, they are an improvement from the previous years especially with having an "independent" chair of the commission leaning more republican. There are already competitive elections coming out of these new districts with sitting Republicans and sitting Democrats competing against each other in the coming election year. More info to come.

Estado del Estado
La semana pasada tuvimos el placer de escuchar el último discurso del Gobernador Ducey sobre el Estado del Estado y no nos decepcionó. Él (por supuesto) abrió su discurso fortaleciéndose a sí mismo por ser el primer gobernador en dar su octavo discurso del Estado en 30 años. Como esperamos, esa no fue la única vez que Ducey se aplaudió a lo largo de su discurso. Mientras que nuestro estado tiene la tasa más alta de COVID y hospitales invadidos, de alguna manera encontró una forma de celebrar su respuesta a COVID-19.
Dijo que Arizona salvó vidas durante esa pandemia, ¿alguien le ha dicho a Ducey que tenemos la segunda tasa de mortalidad más alta de COVID-19 justo detrás de Mississippi? ¡Estoy cierta de que no le importaría mientras sus bolsillos y los de sus amigos se agranden! Ducey declaró con entusiasmo lo bien que está nuestra economía mientras mantiene como rehenes miles de millones de dólares federales entregados al estado para ayudar a combatir a COVID-19. En cambio, mientras nuestros niños y los más vulnerables sufren, está utilizando ese dinero para impulsar su propia agenda política.
Dijo que hay que poner más énfasis en las matemáticas y no en las máscaras, bueno, Doug es muy difícil centrarse en los números en el aula cuando los maestros y los estudiantes todos están sintiendo los efectos de la pandemia.
A partir de ahí se puso peor. Elogió a "nuestros policías" más específicamente al Departamento de Policía de Phoenix, departamento de policía más mortífero de la nación actualmente bajo investigación del Departamento de Justicia por violaciones de derechos civiles. Con su discurso llegando a su fin, no pudo evitar usar una retórica anti-inmigrante y de crisis fronteriza contra la necesidad humanitaria en la frontera. Quiere malgastar millones de dólares en proteger la frontera mientras los niños y nuestras escuelas siguen sufriendo.

Mapas de redistribución de distritos
La redistribución de distritos es el proceso por la cual se trazan los nuevos límites del Congreso y de los distritos legislativos estatales. Cada uno de los nueve Representantes de los Estados Unidos de Arizona y 90 legisladores estatales son elegidos de las divisiones políticas llamadas distritos. Las líneas de distrito se vuelven a trazar cada 10 años después de la finalización del censo de los Estados Unidos. El Gobierno federal exige que los distritos tengan una población uniforme, que no sea discriminada por motivos de raza u origen étnico. Sin embargo, cuando estos distritos se dibujan desigualmente, esto se llama gerrymandering. Gerrymandering es una practica utilizada para discriminar a las personas, por lo general, las de bajos ingresos y las personas de color. Los activistas han estado luchando por décadas, y con cierto éxito este año a pesar del solito tentativo de sabotaje.
Después del último Censo en 2020, finalmente tenemos nuevos mapas y aunque no están tan dibujados como podríamos haberlos querido, son mejor que antes esperabamos, especialmente con tener un presidente "independiente" de la comisión inclinando más republicano. Ya hay elecciones competitivas saliendo de estos nuevos distritos con republicanos y demócratas compitiendo entre sí mismos en las elecciones preliminares. Más información por venir.
