COVID-19
If you thought that COVID was over, think again! 46% of Arizonans are fully vaccinated, but hospitalizations are on the rise. The Delta variant, deemed to be the strongest, has a high transmission rate that makes up the 50% of US cases.
Fully vaccinated individuals will not experience severe disease or risk hospitalization, people who are not vaccinated, might have to be concerned. Areas with the lowest vaccination rates are more susceptible, so make sure to get vaccinated to increase our chances of getting out of this alive. Stay safe, mask up, and get vaccinated!
Immigration
Last week, as U.S. District Court Judge, Andrew Hanen ordered that the Biden administration stop accepting new applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Started by the Obama administration, Hanen argues that the administration violated federal administrative law. This isn't the first time that Hanen has blocked important bills from passing, as he blocked another similar program that would have provided protection for parents of green card holders and U.S. citizens in 2015.
Recipients are still able to reapply for DACA and advance parole. No new applications will be accepted, and there is still uncertainty about what will happen. To learn more details check out this infographic made by United We Dream.
It is important, as it has been stated time and time again, that inclusive immigration reform is passed by any means necessary. The Biden administration continues to express support for passing the Dream and Promise Act, however that legislation is being prevented from passing through rules created by the filibuster.
This a slap in the face to the thousands of undocumented people that after a long wait were finally able to apply to the program. Although not perfect, the DACA program, a temporary and expensive two year subscription, provided relief for a select few, leaving out the majority of what makes up the immigrant community. The Dream and Promise Act can provide the necessary protection for our community, so it's important to call and urge your senators to vote in favor.
Arizona
In an article that came out earlier this week from CNBC, the state of Arizona has been ranked number 1 in the nation. Unfortunately, the ranking was a list of the worst states to live in the country.
Natural beauty was the only aspect that was positively highlighted, with the rest focused on the negatives such as having “some of the worst air quality in the nation”, the article stated citing the American Lung Association. This was made worse over the last two years after the implementation of fines and other disciplinary regulations were scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The huge footprint of the Phoenix metropolitan along with lack of funding for public transportation also adds to the abismal air quality that we must breathe in every day, disproportionately affecting low-income communities.
Public health funding, crime, and inclusiveness were also among state weaknesses. Not surprising, we have spoken ad nauseum about these subjects and how they need to be addressed at the state level. There is a shortage of doctors and mental health professionals, which in a pandemic is kind of an important thing to have. Physically and mentally, people are worn out and drained. COVID cases are rising, and people need help now.
The final thing that was named, were the new restrictions placed on voting by mail, a bill that Gov. Doug Ducey gleefully signed into law in the name of so-called “voter integrity”. Therein lies one of Arizona’s biggest problems -- the highest office in the State is being held by a man that refuses to acknowledge the state’s issues that won’t earn any political points from his party’s high and mighty.
According to this publication, Arizona is the worst state to live in and the person on top has to accept responsibility for it.
VOTING RIGHTS
Hundreds gathered this past Monday, July 26th, in a march against Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s support of the filibuster. The march was followed by a non-violent sit-in just outside Sinema’s office. This resulted in the arrest of 39 people, including civil rights icon Jesse Jackson.
Participants of the march met at Kachina Park in Phoenix and were greeted by Revs. Jesse Jackson and Dr. William J. Barber II (a leader of the Poor People’s Campaign). Both shared powerful speeches minutes before they went on to lead the march from the park to Sinema’s Camelback office.
This isn’t the first time folks have been arrested outside Sinema’s office and if she continues to support the filibuster, it won’t be the last time. As a result, Phoenix Police cited Revs. Jesse Jackson, Dr. William J. Barber II and the arrestees with a misdemeanor for criminal trespassing on private property.
Monday’s unifying march and sit-in was coordinated as a response to Sinema’s actions. We are letting her know she must put an end to the filibuster and move forward with the passage of voting rights and workers’ rights legislation. The people deserve far more than what she is giving us and together we will continue to let her know that we deserve better.

Si pensabas que COVID había terminado, ¡piensa de nuevo! El 46% de los en Arizona están completamente vacunados, pero las hospitalizaciones están en aumento.

Es importante, como se ha dicho una y otra vez, que la reforma migratoria inclusiva se apruebe por todos los medios necesarios. La administración Biden sigue expresando su apoyo a la aprobación de el Dream and Promise Act, sin embargo, se está impidiendo que la legislación pase por las reglas creadas por el filibusterismo.
Esto es un insulto a los miles de indocumentados que después de una larga espera fueron finalmente capaces de aplicar al programa. Aunque no es perfecto, el programa DACA, una suscripción temporal y costosa de dos años, proporcionó alivio para unos selectos, dejando fuera a la mayoría de lo que constituye la comunidad de inmigrantes. En un artículo que salió a principios de esta semana en CNBC, el estado de Arizona ha sido el número 1 en la nación. Desafortunadamente, el ranking era una lista de los peores estados para vivir en el país. La belleza natural fue el único aspecto que se destacó positivamente, con el resto enfocado en los negativos como tener "algo de la peor calidad del aire en la nación", el artículo afirmó citando a la American Lung Association. Esto empeoró en los últimos dos años después de que se redujera la aplicación de multas y otras regulaciones disciplinarias debido a la pandemia COVID-19. La enorme huella del metropolitano Phoenix junto con la falta de fondos para el transporte público también se suma a la abismal calidad del aire que debemos respirar todos los días, lo que afecta desproporcionadamente a los de bajos ingresos
La última cosa que se nombró, fueron las nuevas restricciones puestas en la votación por correo, un proyecto de ley que el Gobierno. Doug Ducey firmó alegremente la ley en nombre de "proteger" la integridad de los votantes. Ahí radica uno de los mayores problemas de Arizona. El cargo más alto en el Estado está en manos de un hombre que se niega a reconocer los problemas del Estado que no ganará ningún punto político de la alta y poderosa de su partido.
Según esta publicación, Arizona es el peor estado para vivir y la persona en la parte superior tiene que aceptar la responsabilidad por ello.
DERECHO AL VOTO
Cientos de personas se reunieron el pasado lunes 26 de julio de 2021 en una marcha contra el apoyo de la senadora Kyrsten Sinema al filibusterismo. La marcha fue seguida por una sentada no violenta en las afueras de la oficina de Sinema. Esto resultó en el arresto de más de 30 personas.
Los participantes de la marcha se reunieron en Kachina Park en Phoenix y fueron recibidos por el ícono de los derechos civiles Revs. Jesse Jackson y el Dr. William J. Barber II (líder de la Campaña de los Pobres). Ambos compartieron discursos poderosos minutos antes de que llevaran la marcha desde el parque hasta la oficina de Sinema.
Esta no es la primera vez que arrestan a personas fuera de la oficina de Sinema y si ella continúa apoyando el filibusterismo, no será la última vez. Como resultado, la Policía de Phoenix citó a Revs. Jesse Jackson, el Dr. William J. Barber II y los arrestados con un delito menor por allanamiento criminal en propiedad privada.
La marcha unificadora y la sentada del lunes se coordinaron como respuesta a las acciones de Sinema. Le estamos haciendo saber que debe poner fin al filibusterismo y seguir adelante con la aprobación de la legislación sobre el derecho al voto y los derechos de los trabajadores. La gente merece mucho más de lo que ella nos está dando y juntos continuaremos haciéndole saber que nos merecemos mejor.
