COVID-19

Arizona has officially reached over one million COVID-19 cases with 3,000 new daily cases. Only 53.9% of our population is vaccinated and healthcare workers are urging people to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Banner Health and Valleywide Health both reported 93% of patients that were hospitalized with COVID-19 were unvaccinated, and ventilator usage for COVID-19 patients increased by 50%. With cases on the rise again we must do our part to mask up and get vaccinated as soon as possible to stop the spread

On August 23rd, the Pfizer vaccine became the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the FDA. While the others still meet the standards set by the FDA for emergency use, this FDA approval gives the public extra assurance that these vaccines are effective in the battle against this virus.

BUDGET

Doug Ducey is back to prioritizing money over people, this time putting children at risk. Ducey announced that he has allocated $163 million in grants funded from federal dollars for district and charter schools that are "following all state laws" and offering in-person learning. This means schools with mask mandates are ineligible, as current state law bans mask mandates. Despite this, schools are defying the governor and implementing mask requirements to protect their students and staff against the Delta variant. State leaders including the Superintendent of schools have all come out against Ducey’s ridiculous attempts to badger schools to get rid of the life-saving mask mandates

POLICING

New and horrifying details about The Phoenix Police Department have recently come to light. As many know the U.S Department of Justice has launched an investigation into one of the deadliest police forces in the States. However, an independent investigation was ordered by the city manager and what was uncovered was not surprising, but was a disgusting display of negligence, abuse of power, and racism.

In October of last year during a Black Lives Matter protests, 15 people were arrested and charged with felonies (including being part of a criminal street gang) with no evidence. After the report came out swift action was taken: Police Chief Jeri Williams was suspended for one day, in accordance with city policy and three assistant chiefs have been demoted following the investigation. A police sergeant at the center of the report has been placed on administrative leave, pending criminal and administrative investigations. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has been asked to conduct a criminal and administrative investigation into employees involved in the case. This is not a punishment, this is a slap on the wrist and a slap in the face to all of those who have been subject to harassment at the hands of PHX PD. It’s time for transparency and accountability on all levels.
