COVID-19

The emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has caused great concern in the healthcare community as Arizona is seeing its highest COVID-19 hospitalizations in 9 months. With a new and more transmissible variant, it’s crucial to continue to follow the CDCs guidelines especially during the holidays with family and other gatherings. The CDC is now urging everyone to get vaccinated and to get their booster shot as it increases their protection. Not only is it important to get your own booster shot, but it’s also important that children now get vaccinated as the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for children ages 5-11.

Build Back Better

We finally have some good news on the Build Back Better plan! The House voted to include immigration policy in the bill. This version includes protection for millions of undocumented people in the form of parole. This parole would include work permits and protection from deportation. Although this is a step forward and would protect millions of families, it is still not a pathway for citizenship. This is a temporary fix that will only last until 2031. Now it’s in the hands of the senate to create a REAL pathway for citizenship. The Democratic senators that we helped get elected need to take a stand, deliver on their promises, and stop listening to the bad advice that they are being given by the Parliamentarian. Further action needs to be taken and our elected officials must deliver relief for immigrant communities.

Kenosha

Kyle Rittenhouse, 17-year-old at the time, murdered two people last year during a protest against police violence in Kenosha was recently found not guilty on all of the following charges:  First-degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, First-degree recklessly endangering safety, First-degree intentional homicide, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, dismissed, and Failure to comply with an emergency order from State or local government.

Rittenhouse traveled from Antioch, Illinois to Kenosha, Wisconsin to (in his words) “act as a medic and help protect private property” after days of unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha officer that left Blake paralyzed. Rittenhouse claimed he was there to be a medic, but what medic brings an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle to an already tense environment? He created more chaos and had violent encounters with protestors, leaving two dead and one injured. In court, Rittenhouse claimed self-defense and the jurors bought into it. Let’s not forget that the behavior of the judge of this case, Bruce Schroeder, drew scrutiny for many reasons.

This controversial case sparked outrage across the world for many different reasons. Some view Rittenhouse as a champion of gun rights, others rightfully see this as another example of our broken legal system and another clear example why we need to change gun laws in this country. There needs to be accountability and equality in our justice system, we are tired of the same story and the same results.

Liv Knoki

“As a protean artist, I use whatever medium calls to me at the moment. A few of my favorite tools are my sewing machine, acrylic paint, spray paint, seed beads, and glitter. Though I have a hard time staying within the parameters of a specific style, I do gravitate toward geometric clean lines. I thoroughly enjoy layering different styles, patterns and colors. It can seem chaotic and a little off the wall initially, but it all comes together with a cohesive, curious yet serene feeling in the end. Completing and sharing original pieces with a unique story gives me so much life and joy! I’m excited to collaborate with Fuerte to voice the importance of Indigenous voices, leadership and rights through my artistic strengths. The overall goal, of course, is to inspire purpose and appreciation of life among the community! Together, we can heal injustices and live truly to love.”

COVID-19
