In the spotlight

Voting Rights

This past week we saw two new bills that would harm voters #HB2238 would prohibit "unmonitored" drop-off boxes for early ballots which would place new hurdles on rural and tribal voters.  HB2617 instructs county recorders to scrutinize voters, and possibly remove them from the rolls if the county recorder “has reason to believe” that they are not U.S. citizens. HB2617 is an open invitation to discrimination and racial profiling against voters of color. But thanks to organizing efforts and especially to those who called their representatives and Governor Ducey these bills failed to pass and were vetoed.

These extremist republicans who introduced these bills were also urging a judge to end early voting this week. Early voting was used by over 90% of voters in this last election and showed no proof of election fraud despite Republicans' claims that this was a stolen election. This judge ruled against the GOP citing that the Arizona Constitution does not prohibit early voting. Despite this victory, we know that this fight is not over. We will keep fighting for everyone's right to vote including vote by mail so that our communities can safely make their voices heard.

Housing Market

As we know the housing market all over the country has spiked. Many people believe it’s due to individuals buying these homes and flipping them. However, we have seen an influx of billion-dollar corporations come into cities and buy hundreds of homes in order to rent them out or sell them at a high price. This is exactly what is happening in Arizona. The price of rent has hit an all-time high and purchasing a home almost seems impossible. With no rent stabilization laws in place at the state level and the cities banned from taking action by the Arizona legislature, rents will keep doubling and tripling with no end in sight. We can’t solve the housing crisis and lower housing costs for consumers unless we crack down on these predatory practices.

Immigration

As we know a tragedy occurred this week in Texas where families had to face the unimaginable. While families were rushing trying to find out if their loved ones were safe they were met by ICE and Border patrol. This community is over 80% Latinx and having ICE there only creates more fear. There’s no reason for them to be there. After facing backlash all over social media the department of homeland security released this statement:

The site of the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas is a protected area. To the fullest extent possible, ICE and CBP will not conduct immigration enforcement activities there so that individuals, regardless of immigration status, can seek assistance, reunify with family and loved ones, and otherwise address the tragedy that occurred.

This statement came out the day after the tragedy. How were people supposed to know this information? Imagine thinking you’re facing deportation while trying to find out if your child is alive? The focus here shouldn’t be a person's status, but instead, on how federal action on gun control can end mass shootings and stop these tragedies from happening.

Our condolences are to everyone that was affected by this tragedy.
